James Gilchrist and Nathan Williamson have been collaborating on the concert platform and in the development and commissioning of new work for over a decade, exploring in particular depth the field of British song. All the works featured here are included on their recent three CD project, ‘100 Years of British Song’ for the distinguished label SOMM Recordings, which cover an astonishing range of music by thirteen composers right through to the present day, nearly a third of which are premiere recordings.
They present here a programme of songs entirely by women composers. Spanning the 1920s to the 1970s, their music encapsulates the tremendous diversity and richness of British song throughout the 20th century – by turns macabre, visionary, light-hearted, modern, passionate, and humorous.
