Women Composers of British Song

Saturday 9th October 2021 - 10:30am
Holy Trinity Church, Blythburgh

Songs by Doreen Carwithen, Rebecca Clarke, Elizabeth Maconchy and Madeleine Dring.

The songs feature on James and Nathan’s recent set of 3 CDs for SOMM Recordings. The three CD project of British music includes premiere recordings of work by Gustav Holst, Doreen Carwithen, Elizabeth Maconchy, John Woolrich, Geoffrey Poole, and Nathan’s own songs, as well as work by Frank Bridge, Alan Bush, Rebecca Clarke, Madeleine Dring, Peter Dickinson, Ivor Gurney, William Alwyn, and Alan Rawsthorne.

Volume I was released in October 2020. Andrew Achenbach for Gramophone writes:

“James Gilchrist’s contribution is past praise in its probing range of expression and unfailing sensitivity to the text. What’s more, he enjoys immaculate support throughout from Nathan Williamson.”

Volumes II and III are due to be released in June and October 2021.

The three CD project marks the beginning of a larger enterprise called The Art of British Song. The project will showcase British Song, its legacy and its future. Reflecting on gems from the last 100 years while building for the future.
