For a composer whose vocal works are performed week in, week out in cathedrals and churches around the world, Herbert Howells’ instrumental music is strangely neglected – don’t miss this opportunity to hear one of his most beautiful works, the Rhapsodic Quintet for clarinet and strings. Complimenting this luscious piece are the perfectly focused miniatures of Alwyn’s Novelette and Lloyd Moore’s five movements for solo clarinet which, in the words of the composer ‘avoid special effects and instead exploit the core qualities of the instrument’. Mozart’s sublime Clarinet Quintet concludes a wonderful morning of chamber music – unless you include the delicious refreshments provided by Southwold’s Cafe 51!
